Alecia Dawn Young is an artist and scholar who believes the creative process is an invitation to heal. The founder of the creative wellness studio YOGAMOTIF, she believes that generating art and life are connected and invests her time in people, projects, and communities that explore these practices. Her work is grounded in the collective healing of Black m/others and embodied making that supports mental health. Alecia’s career spans a commitment to community arts education and wellness, rooted in making, teaching, and researching in the visual arts.
Her first love was the clay studio, and she pursued this craft through a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University. While there, she also received a New York state teaching certification in K-12 studio arts. After teaching in non-profit and public education for five years, Alecia obtained a Master of Arts Management from the H. John Heinz III College at Carnegie Mellon University.
Currently, she is a practicing ceramic artist, wellness guide, and Ph.D. student in the Applied Developmental Psychology program at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education. Her research investigates the relationship between arts participation and well-being, and data visualization that explores collective voice. She dedicates her time to thriving ecosystems of community-based art and wellness, evident in her public art efforts and through her role as a board member of the Pittsburgh Glass Center. An energetic thought partner, she is grounded in the collective liberation of colonized people and believes that collaboration is our way forward.
